The Legend of Kaldi: Ethiopia, 9th Century

The story of coffee begins in the ancient highlands of Ethiopia. According to legend, a goat herder named Kaldi noticed his goats dancing with unusual energy after eating berries from a certain tree. Curious, he brought the berries to a local monastery, where monks brewed a drink from them — and discovered they could stay alert through long evening prayers. Word of this energizing brew spread eastward, and coffee's journey had begun.

Arabia: The Birthplace of Coffee Culture

By the 15th century, coffee was being cultivated and traded in the Arabian Peninsula. Yemen became the first place to grow coffee commercially, and the port city of Mocha became synonymous with the trade. Coffeehouses — known as qahveh khaneh — sprang up across the Arab world, becoming vibrant centers of conversation, music, chess, and news. They were called Schools of the Wise.

Coffee Reaches Europe: 17th Century

European travelers brought coffee back from the Near East, and by the mid-1600s, coffeehouses had taken root across England, France, and beyond. London alone had over 300 coffeehouses by 1675. These weren't just places to drink — they were hubs of intellectual and political life. Lloyd's of London, the famous insurance market, actually began as a coffeehouse.

Coffee Comes to the Americas

Coffee plants were introduced to the Americas in the early 18th century, first to the Caribbean and then to Central and South America. Brazil, Colombia, and Guatemala would eventually become some of the world's largest coffee producers. The rich volcanic soils and ideal climates of these regions gave rise to the diverse flavor profiles we celebrate today.

The Modern Coffee Revolution

The 20th century brought instant coffee, espresso machines, and eventually the specialty coffee movement. Today, coffee is the second most traded commodity in the world, and consumers are more curious than ever about origin, roast profiles, and brewing methods. From single-origin pour-overs to cold brew concentrates, coffee culture continues to evolve.
